Nationally Renowned Speaker to Visit Dover Middle School and Host a Parent Presentation on April 8th

by Dover Police Charities

Sunny’s Story is a compelling drug prevention story for children, adolescents, teenagers, parents, grandparents, and teachers. This drug prevention story tells of joyful times and sad times, and of how a dog’s best friend was needlessly lost to drugs. Sunny’s Story is narrated through the eyes, ears and mind of Sunny, the family beagle. It is about the ups and downs of life with his young master, beginning with their meeting at an animal shelter, and ending with a futile effort to ward off disaster.

The students at Dover Middle School are currently being read the book in their classrooms and will have a chance to write to the author, Ginger Katz. One goal for the students after hearing the story is to understand the importance of identifying a trusted adult that they can reach out to if ever needed.

The Dover Coalition for Youth and Dover Youth to Youth are bringing Ginger Katz to Dover Middle School on April 8th to speak with all of the students.

A Parent Presentation will also be held on April 8th at 6pm at Dover Middle School in the Renaissance Room. At the parent presentation, Ginger Katz, CEO/Founder of The Courage to Speak Foundation, a nationally renowned speaker, will share the story of her son Ian’s losing battle with drugs. Through her presentation, parents begin to recognize the telltale signs of alcohol and other drug use and the veils behind which those signs hide; anger, denial, fear, pain, and deception.

Copies of the book are available at the library for parents to borrow. We encourage parents to speak with their children about the books message and to help them identify trusted adults that they can talk to.
